It's no secret that the film industry is a male-dominated environment; its rampant sexism has been a hot topic for a while. Sorta Kinda Maybe Yeah was founded by three women in an attempt to tackle this issue and form a collective for females looking to create work, and gain experience and skills in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. We have a DIY, guerilla style approach to filmmaking where we embrace messing up, facing fears, and where there are no stupid questions.
SKMY started when Laura Kirwan-Ashman and Aya Arden-Clarke made a one-minute funny film for the Met Film School Comedy Challenge (which you can watch under Projects). The film was shortlisted and writer Laura won a two day intensive filmmaking course. The entire film was written, shot, and edited in a total of around five hours and they thought to themselves, 'Why the hell aren't we doing this all the time?' They then joined forces with multi-hyphenate Charlotte Lowdell to form SKMY. The collective's first project is a web series which is currently in production and they have collaborated with I Am Dora, the ICO, and the ICA on the Two Films by Josephine Decker project.
